Biking culture and rider’s clubs are on the rise in India and the fascination amongst people for the same seems to be increasing at the rate of knots. Amateur bikers have now begun to look up to biking as an act of liberation and some serious fun. With modern day bikes coming equipped with much better engines and other electrical systems, such rides have become far easier when compared to the situation a decade ago. On the contrary, what also needs to be kept in mind and is of prime importance, is the safety aspect when on long distance rides. It does seem like an act of throwing caution to the winds but these sojourns turn out in the best manner possible if only the rider’s safety conduct is religiously followed. So the next time you plan up to set out on a ride with your buddies to some place far away, be rest assured that you have taken care of the below mentioned safety guidelines which are pre-requisites for cruising over long distances. And heading back in one piece.

Safety gear, a rider’s ornaments – set of articles which are of utmost importance when cruising, a ride stands no meaning without them. To make matters clear, wearing a silly helmet does not mean the safety aspect has been taken care of. A rider firstly needs to understand the kind of helmet that suits him/her being mindful of the fact that it shouldn’t in any way block one’s peripheral vision. There are two basic types of helmets, viz. open and closed face. This is an individual preference and a rider needs to understand which suits best according to their style of riding.

Once this is settled you move onto rider goggles which always come in handy when going for long rides. Your eyes need to be protected at all times and rider goggles take care of that even when the flip-down face screen is not in use. Although it is not one of the most important ones, it still comes in handy over such distant journeys.
Moving on to rider jackets, this is one object which carries a huge amount of significance during rides. A rider’s jacket keeps you immune from the weather and road conditions. Look out for the ones which come along with elbow pads on the outside and do not opt for an over-sized one. Riding for long hours can affect your grip over the handle bars and thus, it becomes imperative to put on riding gloves as it also protects your hands from the harsh weather especially during winters. Besides a jacket and a pair of gloves gives you a true feel of being a biker.

Rider pants and knee guards should be in order and one should never compromise on that. Most of all you DO NOT ride without shoes. Ideally one should go for good quality rider shoes/boots but since they can be a little expensive, decent sports shoes should suffice too.

Luggage – traveling light with the right kind of luggage is paramount. You do not want to be caught up in a situation when your bike breaks down and your luggage renders it immovable due to the added weight. But there are certain things which your backpack just cannot afford to miss. First aid kit, a Swiss knife, rope, rain suits and emergency lights are certain objects which need to find a place in your luggage come what may. Add to that a few munchies/snacks and sufficient water if you are headed to a place which has a lot of barren spots in terms of inhabitancy. If you are traveling in a group then it is always helpful to carry GPS locators which not only maps your route but also keeps track of the whereabouts of your partners. Also, every member of the group should carry a map which clearly demarcates the route that is to be followed.

Rider’s code of conduct – it is always safe and fun if you are on a ride in a group. But there are certain guidelines which need to be followed when riding in a bunch. Firstly, ride in a single lane and do not overtake or race amongst yourselves. Not only does it disturb the movement of the entire group but also rattles and risks the safety of other vehicles on the road. Be familiar with the sign language which should be used while riding on the highways. Shouting out or trying to converse to the fellow rider is a strict NO-NO.
The route that has to be taken needs to be decided incorporating frequent brakes and everyone should stick to the designated route at all times. One might be tempted to ride for long hours for a personal high from which he/she has to restrain. Long rides can tire you down physically and mentally; short breaks help you to regroup and keeps the camaraderie going.

BIKE – the bike needs to pay a visit to its doctor, at least a couple of days in advance to the penultimate day. Brake oil, brake pads and liners need to be checked, engine oil and an overall examination of the heart of the vehicle should be done, battery, wheels and chain-sprocket system needs to be examined before you hit the road. A spare tool kit always helps in crunch situations. All these measures, if taken, can ensure that you end up with an experience to cherish for the rest of your living days.
Road’s your home and home’s calling, wild hogs.

Happy riding.
